Push. Precious.

Since the film Precious is already generating potential Academy Awards buzz -- and it's not even released until fall -- might be a good time to read the novel upon which it's based, Push by Sapphire.

Told from the point of view of an illiterate, brutalized Harlem teenager, this novel charts the psychic damage of the most ghettoized of inner-city inhabitants. Obese, dark-skinned, HIV-positive, bullied by her sexually abusive mother, Clareece, Precious Jones is, at the novel's outset, pregnant for the second time with her father's child.

The novel has been a "must-read" within African American book club and reader circles for over a decade. It's been on my to-be-read pile for the longet time, and definitely is going on my "must-read" list for summer.

This book is excellent. I read it when it came out. I'm so excited to see the movie. It's shocking and disturbing.

When I heard about the movie, I had to read the book first. I'm glad I did. If the movie lives up to the book (which I'm sure it will it not surpass it), there will be a lot of teary-eyed viewers.

I have to read this book! I've walked by Push for years in bookstores and somehow never managed to pick it up. I've heard nothing but good things about the book and most recently the film. It's done very well at the film festivals and the critics seem to love it. I certainly need to read this before the film is released later this year....

I heard about the upcoming movie on Oprah and bought the book. Looks like a quick read from the size of it. I read the first page and it threw me for a loop, until I figured it was written like that purposely - pretty creative.
